Title: Antique cast iron tractor/ Ford
WhatsItWorthToYou.com
Date/Era/Period: circa 1920
WhatsItWorthToYou.com
Description: It is an antique cast iron tractor with spoke wheels on front and back. It has a crank handle on the front of it and the driver is made as one piece with the tractor. It is two pieces molded and connected lengthwise down the center and from an underview it gives the appearance of being hollow where the motor is. On the front sides of the tractor appear the word FORD. It is a red tractor and the driver is painted black with the exception of the face and hands which are painted flesh colored and there are black dots for the eyes and mouth. The wheels are painted silver and are also solid cast iron spoked wheels, front and back. The tractor measures 3" high x 6" long including the crank x 3" wide at back wheels and a 2 1/4" wide at front wheels. The tractor hood is 1" in width and about 3" long. We are unsure of the exact age of this piece except that it it was my husbands grandfathers toy as a boy and he was born approximately 1911. It has its original paint. Also, molded into the back of the tractor, on the bottom below the driver, is a small hole that looks as though it were made to be able to tow other toy farm equipment.

Grade: Very Good

Condition: The paint is worn or chipped on the top of the drivers hat and the wheels have a few spots of rust but they are light . The rest of the tractor has a worn petina but the paint is still there and not chipped except for the top of the drivers head as mentioned above. There are two small chips out of the black paint on the drivers back on the left shoulder that are about the size of the head of a straight pin. Red paint is showing through in those spots. The hand crank is still complete and unbroken. All four wheels turn. This item has been kept in my china cabinet and cleaned only with a dry paint brush (artist style) for the last 17 years and for its age I would say it is in excellent condition but not mint.

Origin: This tractor was a toy that my grandfather in law had as a child and gave to my husband when too was a child.

Provenance: This item was given to my husbands grandfather as a gift when he was a child and was given to my husband, by his grandfather when my husband was a young man.

Appraiser Comments: Your cast iron toy Ford tractor with driver could have been made by a number of different companies. The two most likely are Arcade and Hubley. The Arcade Manufacturing Company was in business in Freeport, Illinois from 1902 to 1943. The Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster Pennsylvania, began making toys in 1909 and was purchased by the Gabriel Company in 1965.

Your tractor retains two important things: its driver and most of its paint. The only thing missing is a model number or manufacturer's name, but that was common for cast iron toys produced during this period.

These tractors are being widely reproduced and imported into the USA from Asia. Although inexperienced collectors may not be able to tell the difference between the new and the old, comparing a new one side-by-side with an original will usually reveal obvious differences.

Since I am unable to examine this item in person, it is assumed to be an original circa 1920 Arcade or Hubley cast iron toy Ford tractor with driver, in very good vintage condition, with no other flaws aside from minimal paint loss. The values given below are based on these assumptions.
