| Title: | African fossil teeth | |
| Description: | This is a fossilised jaw bone with teeth. They measure 9 inches in length and the widest section is approx 6 inches. There are still 7 very worn teeth, the largest of which measures 2 inches in diameter. | |
| Condition: | I would think it is in good condition as all the teeth appear to be intact. A few of the roots seem to be missing | |
| Origin: | This item was found approx 50 years ago whilst planting on our farm in Natal South Africa. | |

| Appraiser Comments: | Hello, this is Anita Bartlett-Picarella from New York. Your request for an appraisal has been referred to me for reply. I have closely examined the information you submitted. My findings are based on this information. What an extrordinary item! To find out what animal this specimen came from and its date, you would have to have a laboratory test of it's age. Based on where it was found, it would have to be a mammal from South Africa. Following is a link to South African indiginous mammals for your reference and to explore. Perhaps you can make a determination on your own. http://www.southafrica.info/ess_info/sa_glance/fauna_flora/wildlife.htm I am not an archeologist both can only examine items that have come to market. In a review of auction comparables reveals that most fossil items sell in the range of $400 - $1200 and I expect that yours would come within this range, unless after further investigation, it happens that this is a rare specimen. Perhaps you can contact the American Museum of Natural History and send them photographs. A link to their site is: http://www.amnh.org/ I would suggest calling them on the phone first and get the name of a contact person so you don't wait ages to get a response. If you are planning to sell, keep in mind that the values listed below can vary depending upon how and where marketed, locale, and may vary across different collecting disciplines. If you are satisfied with the services I have rendered, I would be most grateful if you would take the time to leave some positive feedback.
